Specialist in Sociolinguistics, with focus on Arabic dialects.

My research focuses on linguistic variation and change, dialect contact and new-dialect formation.

I teach and supervise on general and specialist topics in Sociolinguistics, including dialect contact, mechanisms of linguistic change, new-dialect formation, gender differentiation in language and multilingualism.

In addition to research and teaching, I engage in public debates about linguistic discrimination, marginalisation and linguistic human rights in general. I work with academic institutions worldwide as well as governments, civil society and private sector organisations and charities.

    My publications address a range of topics in linguistic variation and change, critique methodological and analytical practices, and suggest alternative approaches based on empirical data. See also details on my completed and ongoing projects

  • Keynote Addresses

    I have presented keynote lectures at conferences, colloquia and seminar series in Europe, North America and the Middle East. I strongly support and contribute to student conferences and new initiatives.

  • Consultation

    I provide consultancy to academic institutions on setting up new degree schemes and assessment of existing programmes. Outside academia, I am an expert analyst in asylum cases, dialect representation in films and other media productions. I work with governments, private law firms sector, charity and civil society organisations.

  • Public Lectures & Media Appearances

    Spreading awareness and knowledge about language and society to a non-specialist audience is something I am passionate about. I therefore regularly speak in public forums and media outlets. Some content is available to view here.
